“The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own we have no soul of our own civilization.”
The Wright Way: Frank Lloyd Wright Tour of Oak Park
Step into the birthplace of a revolution in American architecture with a customized private walking tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Oak Park — a neighborhood like no other. Oak Park is a serene, tree-lined suburb just west of Chicago, brimming with architectural treasures. It’s here that Frank Lloyd Wright first gave form to his groundbreaking Prairie Style — a uniquely American approach to architecture that rejected old-world ornamentation in favor of organic harmony, horizontal lines, and integration with the landscape. On this private tour, your expert guide will lead you through a quiet, residential neighborhood that feels almost like an open-air museum of Wright’s evolving genius.
From the geometric elegance of his early homes to the daring creativity of his own Home and Studio, you’ll gain insight into how Wright’s ideas would influence not just American architecture, but the built environment around the globe. Along the way, you’ll also see homes by Wright’s contemporaries and protégés, deepening your understanding of the Prairie School movement and its enduring legacy.
With Inside Chicago Walking Tours — Chicago’s top-rated local tour company known for revealing the beauty beyond the façades — this is more than a tour. It’s a journey into the heart of modern architecture, led by passionate experts who make the history come alive with every step. Experience not just the magnificent architecture but also the lives of the people it was made by and for, a story rife with drama, inspiration, and compelling characters: Wright himself, creating his persona while raising a family and starting a practice; Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham, Lorado Taft, Clarence Darrow, Mamah Cheney — even Carl Sandburg — working, living, fighting, and loving together as they paved historic new vistas in American art.
NOTE: This tour takes place in Oak Park, which is just outside of Chicago. There is public parking near the starting point for the tour, and the CTA’s Green Line drops off only a few blocks away.
